2017, year of the Giannis ? Interview with the Greek rising star !

I've interviewed the gifted artist Giannis Milonogiannis and we've talked about some stuff like his carreer, inspirations but also about video games and his opinion on the controversed movie Ghost in The Shell. So many thanks to him !

"I would love to work with European publishers, hopefully that can happen one day. A lot of my favorite authors work with publishers in Europe." Giannis Milonogiannis
LGC : Can you introduce yourself and your work ? When did you start drawing ? How did you become a pro ?
Giannis Milonogiannis : Hey! My name is Giannis and I draw comic books. My first real book was Old City Blues which started in 2010. I started seriously studying drawing around '04-'05 or so.
LGC : You have worked for Marvel, DC, Image, Archaia and IDW. Can you tell us where was your best experience ? Would you want to work with European publishers ?
Giannis : I would love to work with European publishers, hopefully that can happen one day. A lot of my favorite authors work with publishers in Europe. As for best experience -- it all really depends on the team you're working with more than the publisher, I think. I've been lucky to work with cool people so far!
LGC : You seem to have a great relationship with Brandon Graham (King CityIslandProphet...) : your team work on Prophet was amazing !
Giannis Brandon's an artists I studied a lot from when I was starting out, and we eventually got to work together which was a big deal for me. Getting to work on Prophet was really a fun time!
"OCB started as a free webcomic because I knew at the time nobody would read it any other way. So I'm glad the books are in print, but I think OCB should always be free for people to check out. I'd feel bad if I went and make it harder for people to access. Giannis Milonogiannis
LGC : Your art is full of the spirit of 80's and 90's mangas and video games. Which and who are your main source of inspirations ? Can you explain your love ?
Giannis : There's a fun aspect to a lot of the old stuff -- I can't explain the love without resorting to nostalgia, but the visuals of the time really work for me. The big chunky videogame polygons and the very explosive comics, both in manga and american comics, it's stuck with me.
LGC : I really like your original creation Old City Blues and its constant quality level up. Can you told us more about this cyberpunk cop story ?
Giannis : Thank you, I'm glad you like it. OCB is a book I started to teach myself how to make comics, so it always has that aspect of trying new things and trying to improve in my own time. The story is generally a police procedural in a future world -- sometimes I'll try to make it my own Appleseed, other times my own Miami Vice. So it's mostly a playground to have fun in.
LGC : You're proposing OCB for free digitally on your tumblr. Thanks a lot but why ?
Giannis OCB started as a free webcomic because I knew at the time nobody would read it any other way. So I'm glad the books are in print, but I think OCB should always be free for people to check out. I'd feel bad if I went and make it harder for people to access.
LGC : You're Greek. Are you concerned by the troubles Europe and your country are facing ? Would you want to draw an engaged comic book (in OCB, i've feel some political critics).
Giannis : I like the escapism of fiction and I don't think I'm mature enough yet to write something like a documentary comic. The climate in the entire world is really troubling.
LGC : What are your next projects ? I've seen a teasing about a ThreeA (I'm a great fan of their toys). What can you tell about it ?
Giannis : ThreeA are doing a Solano figure which the preliminary work on is done and it will shown later this year! There are plans for more, but we're focusing on this one for now. I'm very excited for people to check this one out. I'm currently drawing GI JOE for IDW, and this month I'm also starting a new OCB chapter online, so please check that out, too.
LGC : Have you seen the Ghost In The Shell movie with ScarJo ? What are your feelings about it ? What do you think about the white washing polemic ?
Giannis : We watched the movie the other day --  it was a fun time but nothing I'd probably watch again. It doesn't compare to the comic or the other adaptations, in my opinion.

LGC : Last question : Appleseed or Ghost in The Shell and why ? :)
Giannis : Haha, a tough question! I am more drawn to GITS because it was my first Shirow book, but his artistic and writing progress on Appleseed is also a huge lesson. The second Dominion book is also a huge favorite of mine! If anyone hasn't read that one, check it out!
